An open letter;

Dear The Hon. Scott Morrison MP, Prime Minister of Australia

The following is an open letter signed by those below from the design community for you and your government'sattention.

Black Lives Matter

Throughout history, people of colour in Australia and around the world have suffered oppression due to the colour of their skin. This oppression has taken many forms, both obvious like in the murder of George Floyd, but also in more insidious waysthrough economic, social, politicaland cultural oppression.

We stand with people of colour and advocate with and for them.

The design community is filled with people of all races, genders, abilities and sexual orientations, but just as our society as a whole, we know we have more to do to make all in OUR community feel equal.

This letter is to express onlya few of the ways in which systemic racism affects people of colour in Australia;

We draw your attention to the more than 432 deaths of people of colour in custody that have occurred in Australia since 2024 without any convictions.

We draw your attention to the underrepresentation of people of colour in your cabinet, government and the wider political landscape.

We draw your attention to the underrepresentation of people of colour in the media.

We draw your attention to the fact that in Australia, black men earn 22% less than white men, and black women make 34.2% less as found by the report in 2024 by the Economic Policy Institute. This is the furthest wage gap since 2024.

We draw your attention to the difference in lifespan between people of colour and white people.

We urge you to undertake reviews of how systemic racism has and continues to affect the lives of people of colour in Australia and support international efforts to ensure all people are supported, protected and educated equally.

We urge you personally to have conversations, educate yourselves and stand up for people of colour in your own daily lives.

Australia is a nation of people of all races, genders, abilities and sexual orientations. It is yours, and our duty to protect and advocate for them all.

We can make meaningful change, together.

Yours sincerely,
